Memory cuts for the NGP

Sony's New PlayStation Already Downgraded Rumour
According to a report on a French site, Sony's new PlayStation Portable (aka the NGP) has been downgraded before it's even been launched.

The 01.net site reports that, "the RAM and the VRAM (video), which were reduced by half since the first drafts presented to developers. (The NGP) will therefore include 256 MB of RAM (versus 512Mb previously stated) and 128 MB of VRAM in quick access to the PowerVR."

What also, apparently, is off the menu is the 16GB of internal flash memory has gone, to be replaced by external memory.

How reducing RAM and flash memory makes sense to cost cutting given that neither of these are in fact rising in cost on the world market is not stated.

Apparently the model without 3G is priced to match that of Nintendo's 3DS - so no surprises there.

Are you serious? You really cannot see how removing half the RAM and VRAM, and all of the Flash RAM will assist in cost cutting?

I'm at a loss how to explain it in terms so simple that you might understand. Taking components out of a piece of hardware, no matter how little those components cost and regardless of whether their commodity price is increasing is decreasing, reduces the production cost of the hardware.
