The Smithsonian American Art Museum has announced the games that will feature in its Art of Video Games exhibition next year, following months of voting from the public.Spanning five generations of gaming, the exhibition will feature designs and screenshots from a wide range of console releases, from the Atari VCS version of
Pac-Man to
Attack of the Mutant Camels on Commodore 64, all the way to
BioShock on the Xbox 360 and
Heavy Rain on PS3.
The list is a pretty fantastic one - games of note include
Earthworm Jim on the Mega Drive,
Super Mario Bros 3 on NES,
Goldeneye 007 on N64 and
Shadow of the Colossus on PS2. The Dreamcast selection includes
Shenmue, which will no doubt spark even more calls for a third entry in the adventure series.
On top of the publicly voted games, the Smithsonian has selected five titles for attendees to play in a special exhibit. The games on show will be the arcade version of
Pac-Man,
Super Mario Bros,
The Secret of Monkey Island,
Myst and
World of Warcraft - all games that have had a dramatic impact on the industry in one form or another.
The exhibit will take place between 16th March - 30th September 2012. See the full list of
winning games here.
