Market Leader Posts Substantial Losses
Sony posted losses in excess of 13 billion yen this week, approximately £70 million, in the second quarter of the financial year ending September 30.

Despite increased sales in the megacorp’s music, movie and video game sectors, Sony is being let down in the field of consumer electronics, televisions, hi-fi’s, and the like. It is rumoured that Sony will axe 20,000 jobs by Easter 2002.

This bad news aside, the future does looks promising for Sony Computer Entertainment. Now the largest division of Sony, SCE’s sales have nearly doubled last year’s, accounting for revenues of 243 billion yen, around £1.4 billion. The introduction of PlayStation 2 into the global market has played a critical part in these astounding figures.

SCE recently announced global sales of PS2 had reached 20 million, and is forecasting more increases in sales.

So while Sony may have a few concerns, SCE can rest assured that it is going to be around for a long time, thanks to you lot.

Sony, you owe us one.
