Hundreds of gamers lined up outside Oxford Street's HMV store last night for the launch of Nintendo's brand-spanking new 3DS console, as Hadouken and Plan B rocked the Thames at the company's official party.
22-year-old Marwan Elgamal was the first lucky punter to get his mitts on a 3DS - and he's a bit of a Nintendo fan as well, as he told SPOnG last night that he was also customer #1 for the Wii when it launched back in 2006.
His dedication involved waiting in front of the HMV store on Wednesday night for a ticket which confirmed his place - after which he was free from the shackles of overnight street sleeping and given the opportunity to return on the night to collect his prize. In exchange for around £200 of course.
The party went further than Oxford Street though - the Old Billingsgate venue was the place to be for VIPs of all sizes as Nintendo hosted a big launch bash that featured live performances from Parade, Hadouken and Plan B. Retro-themed party organisers Nintendisco also offered attendees the chance to be the best Street Fighter in town via big-screen tournaments. And of course, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono was kicking around both events to chat to fans all night.
Pre-orders for the Nintendo 3DS recently topped UK records, so finding one without putting your name down first might prove to be a bit of a problem. Nintendo has warned that, if you want one, you should act fast because the deals that various retailers are honouring may not last for long. Best hop to it.
