Mortal Kombat is coming back this April, and the art director at developer NetherRealm Studios is letting us all know that the team focused heavily on the most important element - fatalities.Writing on the
PlayStation.Blog, Steve Beran said that the developer wanted to take the series back to its very roots. That means a 'Mature' (18+) rating with plenty of blood and guts to spill. He noted that one of the benefits of having access to the latest new technology is that more time is spent dreaming up nasty finishers.
"We wanted to make sure there were a ton of fatalities for all of the iconic warriors in the game (with two fatalities, minimum, for every character) as well as fatalities for some of the dynamic environments. There is a looot of content for players to uncover – and we finally had plenty of time to build it all," Beran wrote.
"In the past, we didn’t start designing and implementing fatalities until the majority of the game was finished. But with this game, the team began working on fatalities early in the development cycle in order to have the maximum amount of time to come up with ideas and polish them."
One particular storyboard that was published includes a Scorpion fatality in which the undead harpooner hacks away at his opponent with his trusty sword, kicks the body with such force that it smashes against the wall and slices the decapitated head in half. Nice.
