Hold on to your spats - Apple has thrown in subscription support for games on its iOS platforms! The result is that some of those games you thought were going to be 'free' may well soon not be.The inclusion of in-app subscriptions for games follows the launch of Rupert Murdoch's iPad digital newspaper The Daily, which needed a method for users to continue to purchase new issues at a nice price. Now game developers can take advantage of the same feature.
Users sign a digital agreement that gives you content as and when it becomes available, and the expense is automatically taken out of the same account you use for iTunes and other app spending. And best of all for publishers, Apple is taking no money for new subscriptions if companies manage to bring their own subscriber audience to their app. If Apple brings a subscriber to an app itself though, it will earn a 30 per cent share.
"All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app," writes Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
"We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers."
