German MMO developer Frogster is experiencing something of a civil war on its community forums - and the ringleader is a hacker threatening to release the company's user data unless it meets certain demands.User Augustus87 is wanting an improvement of customer and staff relations from the
Runes of Magic company, along with better working conditions for its allegedly downtrodden employees. He will fight Frogster on the beaches and he will fight on the landing grounds apparently, as he has leverage. He's threatening to post the user data of 1000 accounts each day until he wins the battle.
Frogster retaliated as anyone would when facing confrontation on the internet - it called the police. "We promptly assembled a task force and are of course making every effort to get to the bottom of this incident," reads a statement.
"This incident is very distressing to all of us. It is targeted not only at Frogster as a company, but also at
Runes of Magic as a virtual biosphere and at you as players. We are always open to constructive suggestions. However, giving your opinion on blackmail and extortion is surely not the correct approach." Indeed.
The online community doesn't quite see it from Frogster's point of view though. A large number of them are pissed. Although the
company claims Augustus87's data is outdated - with listed accounts already revoked or changed to safeguard privacy - customers are less than convinced, and are largely supporting the intent of the hacker's actions.
Bit of a pickle. What do you think, readers?
