PlayStation Phone Video Demonstrates Resident Evil 2
Someone's been a little bit cheeky and let the PlayStation Phone further out of the bag, with a video demonstrating the upcoming Sony Ericsson device running Rage Racer and Resident Evil 2.

Known as the Xperia Play, the mobile phone runs an Android operating system and includes an application that is said to run PSP games using the sliding controls seen below. Obvious cues have been taken from the PSP Go, with the curious addition of what appears to be a touch pad in the middle. Unfortunately this was not used in the video but we'd wager it's an input for dual analog sticks.

What are your thoughts? Does this confirm the existence of a PSP Phone? Does the showcase of PSOne titles make you a bit suspicious? How about the device itself - would you snap it up, looking like that? Let us know in the forum below.

This looks cool. Hate to rain on its parade, but with two new RE games due soon, I'd rather play/see them. I love emulation, but how about showing this thing running a game that actaully pushes its limits. PS1 emualtion is easy as chips now, but if this was running PS2/GC style graphics, then we'd be talking.

Sony, you took far too long over this, when you should have been selling such sweet option on PSP as standard. I'm yet to see an ads telling folk, 'hey, PSP can now emulate PS1 games.'

Don't worry, Joji, this thing is easily more powerful than a PS1, PS2 and PSP. You'll be seeing much better stuff than this sooner or later.

If the playstation phone is easily more powerful than the PSP and the batteries are capable of a "generous battery capacity" (as stated in spong's previous news about the PSP phone) then i seriously wonder about the price of this device because its obviously going to cost a hell of alot if what you said about the power of this device is true...(and yes i am keeping in mind that your ID is "unofficial sony spokesman") and this has to go up against the 3DS? i am being honest when i say i am not a biast gamer (meaning i dont include myself in that immature console war s**t) but i honestly dont see how the addition of a phone (something that many people already have) going against the idea of playing handheld games in 3D without glasses can compare even in the slightest.
Additionally... didnt the PSP prove that power isnt everything? the psp was obviously more powerful than the DS and it even had a much bigger (and better quality) screen than the DS yet the innovation of the DS won the gamers hearts.

playing games in 3D on a handheld without glasses is Nintendo's new feature to boast and it is alot more appealing than a phone being added to a handheld. While it might not turn out to be as powerful as the new PSP phone, It clearly isnt just a normal DS with added features as the 3DS is also more powerful than the DS.

It will be interesting when they finally reveal the price of the PSP phone..

The PSP screen was possibly better than the original DS, but there was a lot wrong with it. And you are right, power isn't everything. The PSP was more powerful, but had a lot wrong with it.

Don't see this phone as being a competitor to the PSP, DS, DSi, 3DS or any other handheld. It's not and it's not supposed to be (if it was, why would Sony also be releasing a PSP2?). It's a competitor to the iPhone. It has very similar specs and power to the iPhone. You'll see a lot of similar iPhone games on it, but what you'll also see is this phone being better to play certain (traditional console type) games far better than the iPhone due to the physical controls.

iPhone is great for Angry Birds, Cut The Rope, Bejewelled and many other touch based games, but for any joystick/joypad games, it's second rate. This is going to offer the best of both worlds. I'll also wager that if it gains a lot of interest, some future version of the iPhone will have an official set of physical buttons.

I hope it is the best of both worlds providing it is affordable.. let me just say that while the Playstation brand is still going strong (and the increase in PS3 sales proves that) It is clear that it is not invincible when it comes to price..
When the PS3 was first released, not even the brand name could convince people that the price tag was justified by its power and there for it led many gamers to other consoles.

It may not be a competitor to the 3DS, DSI etc like you say but reguardless it is still a powerful device that i would bet isnt cheap to manufacture so even if it does offer the best of both worlds it still needs to be affordable to the customer and the only reason why i make a big deal out of the price is because i think we can all agree that the Iphone is expensive reguardless of what people may think of it and the PSP phone being able to control triditional console type games better isnt going to cut it if the price isnt competitive.

with the PS3.. Sony took a "power vs price" risk based on their reputation and it didnt go in their favour profit-wise and keeping in mind that the average sony gamer is going to take a console purchase more seriously than an I-phone competitor in terms of what to spend their money on.. I just fear 2 things... 1) it will be too expensive (and i would like a link of proof to anything said about the price) and 2) the average sony gamer will hold off and keep their money for the PSP2 since (according to you Nintendo/sony spokesman) this is just an Iphone competitor... As a gamer who tries to believe every console/gaming device has its place... i am struggling to see this product fit in when the average fan will hold onto their money with the PSP2 in sight.

It may well cost the same as an iPhone or even more, I have no idea about that.

You should remember, this is not a Sony device, it's a Sony Erricson device. They are essentially different companies. Again, it's not trying to compete in the console market at all. It's sole competitor is the iPhone.

@Unofficial_Sega_Spokesman

Like i said above.. i am fully aware it is not to compete in the console market at all but this does not change the fact that a device such as this would be costly to manufacture and since it boasts gaming and like you said to joli "you will be seeing much better stuff than this sooner or later" well that depends on if gamers see it as a serious gaming device because if they dont then your going to have continuation of ports.. its only logical that a company will only release their big budget games on a system/device that they feel gamers will take seriously enough to buy those games on in the first place..

I mention this due to the fact that again.. while you do make it clear that it is to be the competitor for the Iphone and nothing more... it is obvious that the gaming aspect of the device is to attract gamers.

I am aware that this is a device that caters for more than just gamers and honestly I do wish it well but reguardless of its competitor.. the potentially high price of the product (if more costly) and how the gamer of all its potential customer's will see this product will greatly affect how third party companies will treat this device.

Being someone who knows all too well that all the companies go by the same logic "we want your money", I dont tend to have any "loyalty" so to speak for any company so i honestly do wish sony well but on an end note..

I hope to god that the Playstation phone works better than previous sony ericsson's because to be fair they seriously arnt the most reliable..
