Facebook Civilization Launches Closed Alpha Registration
Registration to get into the closed alpha test of Firaxis' Civilization Facebook game has opened, but creator Sid Meier has said that the opportunity is only available to teams of between 5 and 50 players.

The social networking project - renamed Civ World - is heavily reliant on teamwork to succeed, explains Meier on the game's Facebook page. Individuals will be able to sign up when the final release is made available.

"To win in Civ World, you’ll need to collaborate with your friends in order to do well in the game and become ruler of the world, so we’re grouping people together to simulate how the game will work when it’s available to the world at large," wrote Meier. Gameplay updates will be made as development continues, and alpha participants will get a free bonus to play with in their throne room.

Stressing that the social side of the game won't make it too open-ended, Meier also detailed the exact nature of the project. “Civ World games will have a well-defined beginning and end, each ending with a triumphant civilization and one person recognized as that game’s most prestigious player.

“As you progress through the different eras of time, you'll have the chance to win era victories as well. We want players to have both a final goal to work towards, as well as short-term objectives to achieve as they play. The trophies you unlock with your triumphs will carry over from game to game, and you can show them off in your throne room.”

If you're interested, get a bunch of mates together and sign up on 2K's website. Initial participants will be notified on the 10th January, although Firaxis states that it has plans to add more players to the alpha stage over time.
