Nintendo's Iwata Talks 3DS
With the impending release of the 3DS come the opinions of Nintendo heavyweights Shigeru Miyamoto, Shigesato Itoi and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata.

The trio discuss the device together with giving the machine a spin. Itoi was impressed with the 3D volume control of the device, allowing users to adjust the machine's 3D effect.

Quizzing Iwata as to whether this was a feature included in most 3D devices, the Nintendo of Japan CEO replied that it is not something he has noticed, adding that Miyamoto and other Nintendo staff had the idea to implement this feature of control on the device.

Further conversation covered the company's past attempts with 3D and Nintendo's former CEO, Hiroshi Yamauchi's obsession with the technology. Iwata discussed his experience with the Virtual Boy, prior to him being a Nintendo employee. It was during a meeting with then CEO Yamauchi and his request to check out the Virtual Boy that led to his first encounter with the device (Itoi accompanied him at the time).

Despite the failure of the Virtual Boy as a commercial product, Iwata added that Nintendo maintained its attempts at creating 3D games machines. In essence, the 3DS is the result of these efforts.

Miyamoto added that during the Virtual Boy's creation he was interested in virtual reality, suggesting that the company make something that utilises 3D goggles and had discussed this with creator of the original Game Boy, Gunpei Yokoi. Whilst development began on the Virtual Boy, however, Miyamoto was involved with development of the Nintendo 64. Both machines focused on 3D visuals but their end aims were different.

The creator added that after the Virtual Boy the company made various attempts at 3D such as a GameBoy Advance SP system with a glasses-free 3D LCD screen and that the Gamecube had 3D circuitry allowing for 3D compatability when attached to a special LCD screen.

Miyamoto and Iwata also collaborated on a title named Grand Prix II 3D Hot Rally, played using 3D goggles, developed at Iwata's HAL Laboratory and assisted by Miyamoto halfway through its development cycle. The structure of the games' rallies were changed and Mario was added as a main character to the game.

Yamauchi's obsession with 3D was referred to once more, the former company CEO asking his developers "can you make it jump out" (of the screen). 3D was not implemented into the DS and Wii but some of the 3D effects the company had been working on for a Kyoto-based theme park ride, designed by Miyamoto and Yamauchi called Shiguriden were used as a test phase for the technology.

There will be several instalments to the Iwata Asks column regarding the 3DS so be sure to continue checking SPOnG for updates on these when they become available.
