Mainstream Media Predicts "Touchable Holograms" for Gaming
A columnist for Forbes.com, Paul Tassi, has cast his predictions on what will be hot and what will not over the next ten years for gaming.

In his recent column he reckons that 3D will be glasses-free and provide a more immersive experience as well as maybe (a big maybe) that touchable holograms will be implemented into TVs.

He also predicts that Sony and/or Microsoft may see declines in the next decade, allowing for a company like Apple to move into the home console market with an offering following its success with mobile gaming to date. He added that Google may try to enter the market as well, hoping to take a share of what to offer, either as a new platform or as a publisher.

Tassi also predicts that franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Halo, Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty will still be going strong in ten years' time. He added that he hopes the Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed franchises will be firmly cemented during those years and will continue to produce future titles.

He also suggests that physical media will be gone come 2020. Digital downloads will take over and stores such as Gamestop and Best Buy will disappear or be non-existent as purchase of DVDs and physical games dwindles. Users will have accounts that will allow them to access their purchased titles, meaning less worries about a hard drive being wiped.

Somewhat radically, Tassi also suggests that gaming addiction will increase dramatically as the medium expands and games become more immersive. He refers to WOW as an example of a current title that has a number of addicts and foresees the development of MMOs becoming even more realistic, causing players to trade their ordinary lives for their more virtual ones.

The last bold prediction is that games will be taken more seriously by the general public, carrying less of a stigma and will eclipse the movie industry through sales. It will also become more ingrained into the culture of nearly all age groups as gamers become adults.

What do you think of Tassi's predictions? And do you think any of them will be proven in the next ten years of gaming? Any thoughts, feel free to post them in the Comments section below.

well the last 10 years hasn't moved much, sure graphics have gotten prettier and the most significant change has been motion controls, so its about time something new came to refresh it, and 3D quite possibly can. I can deffo see Apple or Google moving in somehow, i imagine Apple will start small with an Apple TV offering with games through an iTunes style app store leaning more to casual gamers, and having very little to do with actual game development, as for Google again through Google TV or Android based offering again for casual based gaming, and i personally think Gaming IS now sociably acceptable save fo rthe Debarred lawers and cant be arsed like to lay blame parents and its mainly thx to the Wii and games like Wii Fit, Just Dance etc, so its not far from becoming mainstream, plus games sales can beat ticket sales quite alot nowadays so this is already true.

Most of these predictions are a safe bet.
