Streaming service OnLive has announced that it has received a crucial patent covering the invention of cloud-based gaming. The news could mean trouble for rival services Gaikai and Otoy, which function in a similar fashion. The
USPTO granted patent #7,849,491 to the Palo Alto, California-based company just last week. The patent, which specifically covers a "breakthrough" technology where games can run on remote servers and fed to users with a broadband-connected device, was originally filed back in 2002.
OnLive CEO Steve Perlman has said in a recent interview that this is just one of hundreds of patents that the company has filed and is awaiting a response on. He did not say what action he planned to take with rival streaming companies, adding that he has a history of trying to work out agreements rather than outright suing for infringement.
OnLive was switched on in June 2010 for PC and Mac users, with TV and iPad connectivity earlier this month. A version for Android is currently in the works.
