Engadget Denies Fakery - Re-Confirms "PlayStation Phone"

Goes All Passive Aggressive on cries of fake

Yesterday the Internet was a-buzz with "Tis!", "Tis so not!" stories about pix of a Sony Ericsson prototype phone that apparently has a D-pad and PlayStation buttons. The stories derived from an Engadget post. Today, the same site has reiterated its claims in the face of 'Fake!' calls.

Engadget states, "This is a device which has been confirmed through multiple, trusted sources. And we're not just talking good tipsters -- some of our information comes from people much more closely connected to the project. Even since last night we've received more info about the phone -- learning that its codename is 'Zeus,' and it was last seen running Android 2.X (not 3.0, which we suspect will be the shipping version)."

It then goes onto deal with a claim made - and then retracted - that according to SCEE, the pictures were 'definitely fake'.

It states that "...reports state that an employee originally told a publication that the images were fake, only to backtrack and deliver the standard corporate line that the company "doesn't respond to rumor and speculation." It's possible that whomever was originally questioned either didn't know of the device's existence, was lying about its existence, or simply had their response taken out of context."

For its part the unnamed publication in question, Nowgamer, has made its own response to assertions that its claim that SCEE has said the pix were 'fake'. "Like everyone else, we were excited by Engadget's story but, as professional journalists, we sought to confirm the validity of the photos. We contacted Sony and, to my surprise we were met with an incredulous response, one that led me to believe what we were told: that the photos were fake."

Whichever way this one works out, the phone in the pix - prototype it may be - will not carry PlayStation branding (aside from those buttons) if we are to believe what Sony told Sony Ericsson in 2009.
