SEGA Braving the New IP versus Established Franchise Battle

Vanquish sales not disappointing

SEGA Braving the New IP versus Established Franchise Battle
Vanquish didn't manage to break into the UK Top 10 Chart this week, but that hasn't stopped SEGA from being slightly optimistic about the game's performance, with the publisher revealing it is 'encouraged' by sales of Platinum Games' latest.

Mike Hayes, president of Sega West, told IGN that the company understood the challenges that it faced in releasing a new IP during the competitive Autumn season. "The challenge is that it's a new franchise and that it's releasing head-to-head with a lot of established franchises in the busiest time of the year.

"It's been in the marketplace for two days, we've seen the day one numbers and we're reasonably encouraged, but I think we need to see the rest of week one and probably week two just to see how it's going to play out."

The somewhat positive comments are a stark contrast to those of disappointment from Namco Bandai following the performance of Ninja Theory's Enslaved - another new IP that has had trouble in the market, although it managed to break into the Top 10 in its first week on sale.

Vanquish could have been massive with decent marketing. Instead I only heard about this game from the small community of sources who are knowledgable enough to not need marketing to. Sega thinks this is still how the market works.

A few well placed adverts could have made this as big as Gears of War.

It's a hardcore, fringe title with barely half a dozen hours of gameplay, launched opposite Fallout New Vegas and other big games. They're lucky it went Top 20. It'll be gone next week. Also, Bayonetta was s**t too.

I feel more original product is a better way for Sega to go, they just have to find their legs, which is now mix of new and existing games. Vanquish was a cool step, but I feel the lack of mutiplayer, really relegated it in many minds.

As for Bayonetta, that wasn't a Sega game, they just published it for Platinum. It naturally has a lot of respect nods to Sega games which are cool. Though its a hack and slash, Bayonetta is just as awesome as God of War.
