Microsoft seems to have had a kick up the jacksie by someone (well, Steam and Apple probably), as the company announced a relaunch for its Games for Windows Marketplace. The PC download service will be refreshed on the 15th November with more games and the addition of non-Live enabled titles.

Games will be purchased from the web, with the previously mandatory client application used for handling very large files and as a transaction history. Former Digital Distribution planner for Xbox Live, Peter Orullian, will be leading the service reboot, and says that Amazon was an influence in its new approach.

Community features will be arriving later, with a focus on just getting content out there. With Steam already proving to be the digital distribution juggernaut for PC gaming, and Apple announcing its Mac App Store, Microsoft's move could be seen as timely indeed.
