Super Mario's 25th Anniversary hasn't gone by quietly in Japan. On top of various commemorative products and advertisements, the original Famicom game has been given a retrospective in Famitsu magazine, and several high-profile developers have all chipped in with their thoughts.Among the names were Capcom's Keiji Inafune,
Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Bethesda's Todd Howard, Hideo Kojima,
Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi and
Dragon Quest master player Yuji Horii.
"The reason I entered the industry was because I encountered Mario and learned how interesting games can be. Thank you, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto," wrote Inafune. Nagoshi expressed much the same sentiment, while Sakaguchi recalled
Final Fantasy's 20th Anniversary in relation to
Super Mario's 25th.
Todd Howard wrote that, "Nintendo didn't just make Super Mario. They made the genre where the hero always follows the correct path. Congratulations on Super Mario's 25th anniversary."
Hideo Kojima, ever the wordsmith, had plenty to say on the game, including that it "changed the future not just of games, but for all of entertainment, and for myself as well."
But perhaps it was Horii that had the lewdest memories of
Super Mario Bros., recalling the infinite lives trick and "Kinta Mario" - a graphical trick that showed Mario to have, when standing right in front of the coin icon in the HUD, massive balls. Ahem.
Quite. Anyway, congratulations and happy anniversary to
Super Mario Bros., indeed!
