Yamauchi Begs Forgiveness: Gran Turismo 5 Still Not 60fps
Guess we now know one of the reasons why Kazunori Yamauchi suddenly delayed Gran Turismo 5 for (supposedly) a final time - the Polyphony Digital director has admitted that the game suffers from frame rate drops. For this, he is begging consumers for his forgiveness.

When you think about how long GT5's been in development, having frame rate issues is pretty inexcusable. But Yamauchi, in classic perfectionist fashion, explained that his studio is trying to have the game running in an ambitious 60fps. The game is struggling to do this without the odd drop here and there, and for this the man is deeply apologetic.

Speaking to PSM3 magazine (via CVG), Yamauchi said, "Our engineers complain every day. 'Isn't it enough that it's in 1080p? Does it have to be 60fps too?' But I think 60fps is very important, so we're working towards perfecting that.

"There might be times when you have a certain combination of conditions that come together – especially with the weather effects – [and] the game might briefly drop from 60fps, and for that I beg your forgiveness! If you're going from a standing start at No.16 and all 15 cars in front of you are kicking up water, there might not be 60fps at that moment."

Hm, we don't know. What do you think, readers? Will you forgive Yamauchi? Or do you just not care at this point and want to play the sodding game right now?

I think it's good that some people still strive for 60fps. I'd rather have worse visual effects but smooth action than over the top visuals at 30 or worse 15fps.

The first virtua racing in the arcades looked ace to me even though it was all untextured triangles simply because it was silky smooth.

@irritant

Me, too. What I like best, though, is that it shows developers actually care. I'd prefer that attitude than methodically releasing a sequel every year (for example), no matter what.

I like how they're striving for perfection, but they've had 6 years to sort this type of thing out. If it was released on its original November date sans latest 60fps improvements it would probably have gotten the same critical reception and sold the same, so I don't think it will make much difference.

I'm pretty happy with this and the delay to LBP too. They're both going against the "get it out the door and patch it later" attitude that most devs seem to have thes days.

Eh...the title's rather misleading no? The majority of the time, Yamauchi-san stated the game is running smoothly at 60fps...however, during certain times when there's a huge amount of stuff going on in-game (He specifically stated, if you're in 15-16th place from a standing start, during rain/snow) the framerate may drop a bit.

Doesn't mean much, there's still a couple thousands hours worth of gameplay to deal with, before even getting to online 16-player races. Single-Player doesn't have very many races that start dead.

@DrkStr : Agreed, people are far too impatient, acting like there's nothing else to do in the world. I'm psyched because I'll be able to read the new Wheel of Time book without having to decide between GT5 and that (releases on Nov 2nd also).

I'm of the mind, that I'll wait for the developer to give me the game they envisioned.

At this point to be honest i still play GT4, and it's still deeper and further devloped than most games on these "new" systems. GT4 was and is a stellar AAA title. I would rather wait for them to perfect GT5, and it meets the developers standards. All the other games Yamauchi always said there was more he wanted to do but wasnt able. He claims w/ the PS3 he is 'fianally' able to produce the game that he 1st envisioned. And for that...i will continue to be patient.
