American PlayStation 2 Price to Remain Unaltered

SCEA strategy confuses all of us.

American PlayStation 2 Price to Remain Unaltered
In what must be seen as a surprising move, Sony Computer Entertainment America has decided not to follow the lead set by its European counterpart, and is refusing to cut the American PlayStation 2 retail price.

“We’re holding firm to the assertion made earlier in the year and one also made to our business partners that we will not be reducing the price of the PS2 in North America… at least for the course of this year," said SCEA’s Molly Smith. "We’ve never been a company that makes decisions based on the competitive landscape. And we are not going to be competing this year, or even necessarily next year, for the same kind of customer as Nintendo and Microsoft.”

This really doesn’t make a great deal of sense to us. The tired and worn out theory that Nintendo, Microsoft and SCE are not competing for the same market space cannot be proven wrong soon enough. Every investment consultancy and financial institution is busily monitoring the situation in order to make the best investment in the future, yet still the three big players in the hardware market continue to try and tell us that they are not competing for customers.

Anyway, the upshot is that US game players will have to pay $299.99 for their PlayStation 2 consoles until next year, which pleasingly, for once, is almost exactly what we pay in the UK.
