After less than two years, world-wide sales of Sony’s PlayStation 2 console have reached a remarkable 17.9 million units. These results put Sony on target to match, if not better the combined sales of Playstation and PSOne, which are now estimated at around 85 million.
These are the breakdown figures for each territory:
North America – 7.23 million
Japan – 6.54 million
Europe – 4.14 million
Evidently, the United States remains Sony’s prime territory, despite the Playstation 2 being released there almost seven months later than in the company's home country of Japan.
With the newly announced European price cut and with price drops now due in the other major territories, Sony’s hardware sales are likely to accelerate. Expect total sales to at least double by this time next year.
