Danger Close Games' marketing director Craig Owens has echoed comments made by EA earlier this month in stating that the removal of the 'Taliban' name in Medal of Honor was "...kind of from an older generation..."The change was made on the 1st October, after EA constantly defended the game in the face of a growing mainstream media controversy. Gamestop stores on
US military bases refused to stock it - a fact that Owens denies had any influence on the eventual Taliban drop.
"Really the big thing was playing as a Taliban killing US troops. So we basically just changed it to 'Opfor' -- which is a term they [the US Armed Forces] use, some of our competitors use -- more out of respect," he said.
"The objection was, kind of from an older generation that doesn't understand games, that the soundbyte was 'Play as the Taliban and kill US soldiers. There still is, it seems, a group that's still a little bit leery of a game taking place around an active conflict."
Despite the change, Owens appealed to his audience and urged them to try the game before judging it. "[It's] always been about the respect for the troops. It's not about Afghanistan. It's not about the enemy. It's about the brother beside you." Aw. That sounds a bit like something out of a moving war movie in itself.
