Survey Says: Consumers Misguided by 3D
A recent survey carried out by the research firm Interpret has shown that consumers are still unsure of the benefits that 3D technology can offer them.

The survey covered 1500 consumers from the ages 12-65 to find out their views on the re-emerging technology and whether they intend to buy a 3D TV in the future.

Of the findings from the survey, Inerpret's Michael Cai explained the issue with 3D glasses was brought up repeatedly. Their physical discomfort and expense were highlighted major as issues. This accounted for 46% of people in the survey who said they would not get a 3D TV. This, however, paled in comparison to the 69% of consumers surveyed who highlighted that cost was the major reason for them not investing in a 3D TV right now.

Cai also highlighted that consumer's perception of how 3D works is a potential barrier to the technology's acceptance among the public. He highlighted that 63% of console owners thought that they only needed a firmware update to gain 3D on their TVs and 83% thinking that they only need a pair of 3D specs to enjoy the technology.

Do you agree with Cai's findings or do you think that the general public 'get' what 3D is about this time around and will swallow it up in the next couple of years? Post any thoughts in the comments below.

I think the manufacturers don't 'get' the public's lack of excitement about 3d. I think the public has been sold enough new TVs in recent years (flat screen, widescreen, LCD thin screen, HD screens, Full HD screen) and 3D is just another marketing gimmick that won't really offer them an improved viewing experience.

I'm quite keen on getting a 3D laptop if I ever get round to replacing my current one, but only assuming all my fave games support 3D. In the meantime, I'm happy to wait for the 3DS to see if 3D gaming lives up to my expectations.

It's a gimmick innit. As Irritant says, a way to flog you ANOTHER new TV. And for Sky to charge even more.

I watched the Resident 3vil and it reinforced my belief that 3D is pantbobbins.

Human eyes are spectacularly close together, especially in marketing types, and so our stereoscopy is only the cherry on our 3D vision pie, parallax is where we get most of our depth cues from. And good old fashioned 2D TV and movies and games had that down just fine.

3D tv is far too expensive for what it is. also it is so unpractical to the home environment. I can turn and see the TV when in the kitchen. i don't want to cook wearing 3D glasses yet if i didn't have them on the image would be blurry.
I went to eurogamer excited about 3D gaming. i think gaming has more potential for 3D as there is usually 1 user playing on a screen and hence gamers will be more inclined to wear the glasses. but i was disappointed by everything but Starcraft II and Civ V, both of which i thought the 3D added a lot of depth to otherwise very flat games.
