New SDK Brings iPhone & Android Games to Sony PSP
A new software development platform has been launched that enables studios to bring "premium games" simultaneously to smartphone devices - such as iOS and Android - and Sony's PlayStation Portable.

Called Airplay Arcade, the SDK promises to remove the necessity for ports across multiple handheld devices. All developers have to do is compile a single codebase, then use the tools provided to deploy the program to a range of operating systems - including Windows Mobile, Bada, webOS and Symbian.

The PSP Minis catalogue - an initiative launched by Sony to introduce iOS App-style games to its portable device - could see a significant benefit from the platform. Airplay Arcade allows developers to take advantage of the handheld's analog nub and memory stick capabilities.

Take a look at the SDK in full right here. Do you think it will help bolster game sales for PSP and Android? Let us know in the comments below.

Yeah, but it's one written by someone else and supported by someone else which makes life a lot easier for amateur coders.

how does this take into account specs though, surely it must be coded for the least powerful specs? sure thats ok for iPhone and PSP but what about other smart phones, esp android with its massive variety of CPU and non dedicated GPU`s

It won't get used for anything boundary pushing, it'll just be independents making pretty simple games. Plus, you can adjust for the specs of the machines to some degree by simplifying the data for less powerful machines.

As a last resort, you can also have "if this platform do this" sort of code, which you'd need anyway to account for the different input methods etc.

From my experience, that would be enough. I play lots on iPhone and Pad, but nothing boundary pushing. Gyrotate more than anything. Though without touchscreen, that would pretty different. D pad to select "layers" and nub to rotate I guess. And X to simulate releasing...
