UK sales of Nintendo's Wii and DS platforms are down 40% from last year, according to a financial report from retailer GAME.The store chain has seen its overall sales and revenue dip, but has pinned the blame for most of its troubles on a lack of interest in Nintendo's consoles. On the other hand, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were said to have seen annual gains of 17 per cent and 16 per cent respectively.
"The first half release schedule was dominated by core gamer titles such as
Red Dead Redemption and
Battlefield Bad Company 2. GAME took a leading market share on these products, reflecting the strength of our relationship with suppliers, our core gamer appeal and customer recognition of the value of our new release offer," said the company chairman, Peter Lewis.
"Sony has recently launched new models of the PS3 Slim and Nintendo is expected to release the handheld 3DS in Europe next year. Initial reviews of this technology have been very positive." Lewis adds that the launch of the Xbox 360 S model has been the highlight of the year so far.
The release of PlayStation Move and Kinect will also result in sales boosts for their respective consoles, but Lewis noted that this won't have much of a ripple effect until a while after their launches. If true, it could put even more pressure on Nintendo to maintain sales.
