GameCube Sales in Japan

The way things are looking for Nintendo.

The Dengeki Console Charts of Japan have been updated following the launch of GameCube. Here are the results.

1. Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies (PS2)
2. Luigi Mansion (GC)
3. Capcom Vs SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001 (PS2)
4. Capcom Vs SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001 (DC)
5. Mobile Suit Gundam 0079: Zeonic Front (PS2)
6. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 8 (PS2)
7. Everybody's Golf 3 (PS2)
8. Super Monkey Ball (GC)
9. Wave Race Blue Storm (GC)
10. Devil May Cry (PS2)

Taking places two, eight and nine in the above chart, and with only a supposed 134,000 sales in hardware, Nintendo’s GameCube software has performed exceptionally well.

Outranked only by Namco’s A-list title, Ace Combat 4, Luigi’s Mansion achieved sales of 133,677. Luigi’s Mansion’s sales are likely to have been partially influenced by the Japanese video game bible, Famitsu magazine, which awarded the game a highly respectable 34 out of 40.

Following behind, Super Monkey Ball and Wave Race: Blue Storm sold just 22,645 and 22,030 respectively, but accumulated enough sales for a place in the top ten, leaping ahead of Shenmue 2 and Devil May Cry.

Considering sales of PlayStation 2 in Japan are likely to have surpassed the five million mark, GameCube’s overall performance cannot be complained about.

It’s a stunning console, it’s from Nintendo, and we hope to see you in the shops in Spring of next year when the console is launched in the UK.
