Sony Turns to Misleading Bitching to Counter Kinect

Kevin Butler website misleads

Sony Turns to Misleading Bitching to Counter Kinect
Sony USA is attempting to use a very, very bored Kevin Butler-sound-a-like and a frankly terrible website to counter the value comparisons between PS3 Move and Kinect that Microsoft produced some time ago.

Making no attempt to inform people - or attract new PS3 owners - the MoveVSStuff site (pictured) opens with a 'chart' comparing Move to Kinect and Nintendo's Wii. Well, actually, it compares PS3 against the other two platforms using comparisons such as:

- Blu-ray movie player.
- Stream movies and TV with Hulu Plus
- Free access to PSN for demos, HD movies and PS One
- Camera tracks controller for precise gameplay
- Full immersion with HD graphics and pinpoint accuracy
- Game like never before. In 3D. That's right, 3D.
- Controller feedback you can feel and see
- Includes power cord

Kinect and Wii only score on the last one leaving consumers to assume that Playstation Move can achieve all of the rest.

Not true Sony America. Playstation Move is the controller. It can't play movies in any format. Nor can it produce 3D or use HD graphics or get you onto PSN. That's the PS3.

Maybe time to rename the website: PlayStation 3 vs Stuff? Or take it down completely. On the off chance that people could assume that the amateurish attempt to use 'humor' (sic) to sell a product is a spoof set up to actually shame Sony...

This is a terribly written article. Where in the world did the word "comparitor" came from?

The worst artical I have read in a long time, detach yourself from your own issues when writting. its how your reading the information look again and you will see even if it was the ps3 vs 360 vs wii with the new additions of Move and Kinect it all still stands true. Mircosoft will do there own spin when the time is right.

Not really misleading as standard marketing, thats what businesses do!!!!!

Look at the preorders for Kinect in the USA now number 12 in the chart with 10 weeks to go, look for PS3 move bundle it can't even make the chart with just 2 weeks to go.
Desperation by Sony methinks especially with the worldwide sales of the 360 being the highest of any console and the PS3 sales dwindling.

Okay, I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy but I back this arcticle 100% (hmm, less the fraction of a percent for the "comparitor" typo)

The "points" made are totally loaded;

"Stream Movies and TV with Hulu Plus" - Where's the "Stream Movies and TV with Netflix" comparison?

"Camera tracks controller for precise gameplay" - How about "Camera tracks player for precise gameplay" or "Camera-free controller for less clutter TV unit"?

"Controller feedback you can feel and see" - so how about "Controller feedback you can hear and see"?

As for pinpoint accuracy - I'm pretty sure that Move doesn't actually offer "pinpoint" accuracy, as in the down-to-the-micrometre-precision required to discern the width of the point of pin.

BTW, where are these free HD movies and PSOne that the site purports are available on PSN? Oh, that's right. They're not free, it's just the access to see what's available that free. Nasty, tricky marketing BS. Shame on you Sony. The barely humorous "power cord" option doesn't get you out of this one.

Most of the website is just good humor for us (PS3 owners) to appreciate. It's not taking itself seriously at all. I mean, one of the things on the list is PSN access, as just mentioned above, who else would have access to the Playstation network? If you click on download specs, you'll then see comparisons to a hoop with a stick and a pineapple. The whole chart thing is in response to MS's price comparison chart anyway.

It's just a joke. It's totally in keeping with the Kevin Butler persona. And it's awesome and hilarious. Don't take it personally, relax a little. :)

We're always on the look out for writers, especially ones who make me turn around and say, "Blimey, he or she is right" and then change "comparitor" for "comparison", which I just did.

Email me at tim@spong.com so we can put your writing to the benefit of all.

Cheers

Standard business in a fair market is not to produce misleading comparisons. The heading is:

Move vs Stuff - NOT PS3 vs Stuff.
The headers are quite clearly: PlayStation Move (NOT PlayStation 3), Xbox Kinect (NOT Xbox 360), Nintendo Wii.

This is a company selling a product. It is NOT a comedy show.

Also, in terms of our "issues", what doe that psycho-babble mean? Are you saying we don't like Playstation? If so, well, that makes the set. Also, read the rest of the site, specifically... Sony's Actual PS3 Move FAQ is Intense.

Cheers

A terrible, terrible article by a website 'writer' -not a journalist- who is incensed by the marketing of one console maker against his favourite console maker. Not news.

-Dear Ed--in-Chief
Spong used to be my homepage, but it is guff like this that has put me off visiting. There is still time to fix things!

Obviously it's of importance to me if we were your home page and now we're not, we've lost a genuine reader. Therefore, I am interested in your criticisms of the article. I'm always grateful to read valid and thought out criticisms of what we do on SPOnG - and to instigate changes based on those criticisms. Rather than send an email with how you think we can fix things to tim@spong.com, I think it would be a really good idea to air this in this thread.

Let me just clarify one thing. I've been a PlayStation owner since PSOne. My beef with the Move vs Stuff site is that it is actually misleading in its comparisons. I've laid that out in the article and in a previous response.

I hope we can get back as your home page, and that you'll re-register and can post with avatar and username. I also hope that you will take time to describe how we can fix things. I'd appreciate it.

As I say, feel free to email me directly at tim@spong.com.

Cheers

Surely it has to lose a few points for the meaningless headline too?

Sony's Turns to Misleading Bitching to Counter Kinect

Sony's what?

But on the other hand, I do stand by the article. Surely it has upset some readers... but then everything worth writing upsets someone. But the Move vs Stuff site is pretty crappy, and it does draw false comparisons... and very little gets my goat more than purposeful disingenuousness on the part of advertisers. PS3 DOES stand up well to Wii and 360 in a feature comparison. And the Move merely adds to the list with another great feature. But the idea that Move can play movies is... well, fanciful at best.

I'm not sure what about this story has so upset a few readers... because poor title and typo aside, I think it stands up to scrutiny.

As for the comparitor typo. The word is comparison, not comparason. So I believe that it SHOULD be spelled comparitor. But then I'm just in favour of consistency in English. The fact is it's NOT spelled that way.

C'mon, guys. Seriously. SPOnG is a gaming website. Gaming is hardly world-renowned for high standards of journalism, now is it? What more exactly did you expect?

So the title for this page could have been "badly written article slates badly written website". Hardly worth starting a jihad over.

F**king hell, passive aggression is such a t**ttish thing.

If I'm reading the critiques here correctly, the state of the free market and the general level of consumer acceptance right now is:

"As long as you make me laugh while you sell me things, you can say anything you like even if they're not true and I'll swallow it with a grin on my face just wide enough to ensure that the drool is channelled onto the chips on my shoulders."

Would that be right? Thought so.

Just want to say, nothing wrong with the article! Yeah the title might be link-bait, but so what, successful journalists grab attention. The rest of it is well reasoned and sound. (Oh no, a typo! If you're gonna be a spelling nazi, at least make sure your complaints are themselves grammatically correct- you just look like an idiot otherwise!)

Sadly, most fanbois seem to be so blinkered that a genuine complaint is taken as a personal insult and an affront to their "God" company. Chill out!
