Propeller Arena Gets a New Date

Chocks away!

Earlier this week, we reported on the postponement of the Sega Dreamcast’s Propeller Arena, due to last week’s terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC. Cynics that we are when it comes to future Dreamcast releases, we suggested that maybe it was just another example of delaying the inevitable canning of the game. We are now happy to report that Dreamcast owners can recover their pilot licences, as Big Ben Interactive announce that Propeller Arena will appear in January 2002.

The game is an action-packed aviation shooter, and not some flight simulation, which Sega were worried about being used for unsavoury means. Sega of America has issued the following statement. It’s basically a re-jigged, re-edited version of an earlier statement, but here goes. "The gameplay of Propeller Arena does not deal with terrorism in any way, shape or form. However, it is possible for a determined individual to deliberately play the game in a manner that generates images similar to those we have all seen on the news. We want to avoid any misunderstanding that might result from game play being seen or displayed out of context."

In the light of news reports in the past week regarding the atrocities in America, vis-à-vis the possible use of flight sims by the terrorists, their caution is understandable, but really not necessary. We were as horrified as anyone else as last week's events unfolded, but Propeller Arena won’t teach you anything about flying a passenger plane; it’s just an air combat game to play for fun. Lighten up, for heaven’s sake.
