Square Enix has formally revealed its new general-purpose development engine, named Luminous. Project producer Yoshihisa Hashimoto introduced the technology at the CESA Developer's Conference in Yokohama, saying it will help the publisher "truly take the world head on."

Word of the new engine caused a ruckus in the Japanese gaming community after a job listing on Square Enix's website for the project used an image of Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife.

The engine has been made possible thanks to Square Enix's acquisition of Eidos earlier in the year - parts of the Luminous code will include all of the technology were contained in the G2 and CDC engines, which were used to develop Deus Ex and Kane & Lynch.

According to Andriasang, the engine will aim to provide an environment to achieve high efficiency and quality. Bullet points to help detail the project included titles such as "Visual Editing," "Live Editing," "Concurrent Editing," "Automatic Build and Automatic Test," "Online Friendly," "Asset Management Functionality," "Advanced Rendering," "Task Management," "Simple," "Cross Platform," "General Purpose," "Modularity" and "Scalability."

Gives you an idea as to what they're going for. It's worth noting that Hashimoto is no stranger to engine development - his previous job was working for Sega's Sonic Team division as director of Sonic Unleashed. He was the key man behind the much vaunted 'Hedgehog Engine' that powered the high-speed mascot game.

The fruits of the Luminous team's labour won't be far off though, according to Hashimoto - with a follow-up report to be presented within two years at the latest.
