Boon: Mortal Kombat & DC Crossover "Created a Hunger" For Bloodshed
The brand new Mortal Kombat game from Warner Bros is ditching a lot of the series' fluff in favour of a return to gruesome finishers, brutal moves and pints of blood. Creator Ed Boon said that this direction was made from a "hunger" and "lust for a little more bloodshed" following his last game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

While the superhero crossover "performed well," Boon revealed to IGN that he wanted to offer "a little bit more of what Mortal Kombat has been notorious for" this time around. "We saw this opportunity to sort of give [fans] what they want on every single level – not just the fact that we're going to an M-rated presentation, which is big, but give them the gameplay they've been clamoring for."

Boon continued that the decision to bring Mortal Kombat back onto a 2D plane was justified by the success of Street Fighter IV, and that the intention is to allow novices to perform cool moves while including split-second windows for advanced players to execute combos and follow-throughs.

"This Mortal Kombat is probably the one where we're most consciously going after the sort of hardcore fighting game player while staying accessible, which is something Mortal Kombat's always kind of focused on – that anybody can have fun with it," he said.

We're totally psyched about the upcoming Mortal Kombat, and you probably should be too. If you're not, let us know why in the comments box below so we can perform some kind of Fatality. Or, just agree with you and debate like gentlemen. One or the other.

For me, MK was only every about 2 things: extravagant violence and believable-looking characters. Take away one or the other, and it loses its point. Violence on toy-like characters has no shock value; vice versa, real looking people lacking violence is generic.

The technology should be here now, to be able to recreate MK without losing its essence, and there should be enough experience to be able to add to the game, but not just for the sake of it.

I suppose that's all I want to see. Shock-value (and a variety of ways to create that). That alone is enough, I think. There's also a danger of trying to add too much to the game. It's a huge risk to add new mechanics, or even to concentrate on mechanics which aren't core-gameplay.

Still, I'm hopeful!
