Industry analyst Michael Pachter 'correctly predicted' that Xbox Live's pricing would go up by $10 in North America, apparently. That means that everyone should be paying attention to his latest guess - that Microsoft will be introducing a $100 'Platinum' band for the subscription service.Pachter seems so confident that this will happen that he's already talking about what Microsoft could use the extra money for, and what incentives the company could include to get people paying $100. Ridiculous, or not? Oh! Shhh! He's talking!
"The extra $10 translates to around $100 – 150 million per year in additional revenue for Microsoft... If they can get 2 million users to switch from the $60 plan to the $100 plan, they’ll make an extra $80 million a year, and can keep investing to try to grow that business."
To 'the' $100 plan? As in, an already-announced $100 plan that exists? Pachter also opines that Apple and Microsoft will apparently see through their differences and work to allow Xbox 360 users to manage their iTunes accounts through their consoles.
Classically the analyst concludes by adding "I’m not the guy to speculate [as to what Microsoft will offer]," followed with "for all I know, the Platinum plan might include virtual goods credits for various Microsoft games." Someone might like to remind him that the Platinum plan is speculation on his part in the first place.
