Ninja Theory co-founder and creative director Tameem Antoniades has outlined the reasons that we won't be seeing a follow up to the critically acclaimed Heavenly Sword. One of the main reasons is that a third-party developer seriously can't expect to throw all of its eggs into the basket of one platform holder. Says Antoniades to
GI.Biz, "We did actually want to do a sequel, and we did pursue that - but we're not a first party studio, we're a third party studio, and we knew that over the next few years we've got to be releasing multi-platform games. It was more of a strategic decision that we have to be multi-platform."
Of course, the fact that the game, did not "sell enough to have a confident sequel, so it would have put ourselves as a development studio in a very precarious situation", was also key to the decision to leave Nariko and Kai where they were.
Given that the company has
Enslaved to put its energy behind, the idea of doing a sequel to a poorly selling, single-platform title is also less than practicable. The idea that Ninja Theory could still work on a follow-up was effectively sniffed at by Antoniades with a pro-forma "never say never".
