Sony saw its earnings rise for the April to June, first fiscal quarter to 25.7 billion yen (£188m) compared to a 37.1 billion yen (£271.3m) loss a year earlier.
The company saw its music sales (with help from TV show Glee) performing well, but a combination of PlayStation 3, which saw sales nearly double to 2.4 million units compared to the same period in the previous year, a 59% rise in sales of LCD TVs taking it into profit.
All in all this lead to a rise in revenue of 3.8% year-on-year, which produced an perating profit for the quarter of 67 billion yen. Compare that to an operating loss of 25.7 billion yen in the same period in the previous year, and you can see why CEO Sir Howard Stringer is smiling.
