Latest Zelda Title Takes Place Before Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword producer Eiji Aonuma has revealed that the latest title in the adventure series is actually set before the events that take place in Ocarina of Time.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine (via Zelda Dungeon), Aonuma added that there is in fact a "master timeline" that binds all of the Zelda storylines together. The "confidential document" is only available to Shigeru Miyamoto, Aonuma and the director of Skyward Sword.

"I have already talked to Mr. Miyamoto about this so I am comfortable in releasing this information – this title [Skyward Sword] takes place before Ocarina of Time," Aonuma said. "If I said that a certain title was ‘the first Zelda game’, then that means that we cant ever make a title that takes place before that! So for us to add titles to the series, we have to have a way of putting the titles before or after each other."

And that's why they're likely not saying more about the official timeline beyond that point. Classic Nintendo secrecy at work, there.

Sounds to me like they're making it up as they go along...

Master Timeline? How the hell is that possible? isnt each Zelda in a different universe?

So Link to the Past, Orcarina, Wind Waker, Spirit Tracks & Twilight all take place in a continuing time line? yet each world is different, vastly different, and Link is at varying ages both young and old link along with Princess Zelda taking different forms from a princess to a pirate, WTF!

Sounds like a case for the Hawkers!!

What Haritori said. This is madness! And really, what's the point in having continuity in games played by millions that only three people know about? And can they really not say, 'this is the first Zelda game so far', then add in prequels whenever they feel like it?

Bobbins!

@haritori

So, I take it you're completely unaware that (in general) the Zelda and Link in each game are just that generation's incarnation of them? They're usually separated by hundreds, if not thousands, of years and Hyrule has undergone massive upheavels in between, i.e. in Windwaker Hyrule is underwater following a great flood, but it's generally accepted as being set after Ocarina of Time.

There have been very few direct sequels in the Zelda games, the main ones being Windwaker > Phantom Hourglass > Spirit Tracks (have to admit, not 100% sure on Spirit Tracks, it's kind of a follow on from Phantom Hourglass and yet it I believe the Link and Zelda are "new" again) and then there's Ocarina of Time > Majora's Mask, though Majora's Mask isn't set in Hyrule.
