MTV Networks Acquires Social Gaming Developer
After dabbling in games such as Rock Band with Harmonix, MTV has announced a move into the online social games business, following the acquisition from its Networks division of San Francisco-based studio Social Express.

Social Express will not only be responsible for the obvious - developing new social games based on new IP and already-existing MTV and Nickelodeon brands - but it will also be providing a platform for independent game developers to publish their works via MTV.

MTV Networks' CEO Judy McGrath is down with the social gaming, saying it is "one of the biggest drivers of the explosive growth in social media – it's fun, it's engaging, and it's shareable." 'Going forward,' McGrath adds that the acquired studio will let the company enter the market with a distinct amount of savvy.

"We'll supercharge [the social gaming space] with the IP and scale of Nickelodeon and other MTV Networks brands to create great new social gaming experiences for our fans and cool tools for independent developers as well," finishes McGrath. It's great to be passionate about these things.

The first of the planned social games is reported to launch in the third quarter of 2010.
