Sakurai: Japan Is No Good At 'Big Budget' Games
Super Smash Bros. Brawl creator, Masahiro Sakurai, has been speaking about the differences between Japanese and Western game development, and concluded that Eastern game design "isn't a good match" for the big budget Hollywood experience.

In an interview with Techland, the Sora developer - who was at E3 to showcase the 3DS Kid Icarus: Uprising game - stated that he admired the big budget approach taken by Western developers, but laments the fact that the Japanese industry appears to be romanced to follow in the same direction, arguing that they should instead "focus on what they're good at."

"There are lot of different factors such as things like the team size and the way development proceeds and is communicated within teams," Sakurai explained. "I mean, there are instances where this trend is more dramatic than others, where teams are either more well-suited to a certain style or not.

"Don't get me wrong: I'm really impressed with Western game design and enjoy a lot of those games. But, personally - and this is something that Nintendo also follows the same philosophy - I trend towards focusing on a gameplay mechanic and working on that mechanic," he said, adding that a lot of developers spend more time trying to outdo each other rather than focusing on their own design.

Kid Icarus: Uprising looks incredible, by the way. Just thought we'd throw that out there.
