Gears of War 3 was definitely one of the highlights of Microsoft's E3 press conference, and at the show floor Epic showcased one of the new multiplayer modes, titled Beast. In Beast mode, the tables are turned as you control a group of Locust enemies - the aim is to take out advancing COG soldiers. The heroes are controlled by computer AI, but have learned all the tricks you used to pull off to avoid enemy fire from past
Gears games. One of the enemies you can play as is the Ticker, a sort of walking bomb, but due to the delay in fusing yourself and exploding, your opponent could notice you and roll out of your way in the time it takes for you to detonate.
The trick, notes
G4, is to sneak up behind the soldiers while they're being distracted by gunfire elsewhere. You won't just be playing as Tickers though - they represent the small end of the spectrum. Wretches can use cover before going in for an attack, the Butcher can chop COGs up using a huge blade, and you can even control Beserkers for maximum beastly fun.
For the fallen players, a Kantus can be deployed to initiate healing functions. Seems like their resurrecting techniques can come in handy after all, instead of being a general annoyance.
Gears of War 3 isn't due for a release until next April, but you can bet more details will surface between now and then. Keep them peeled.
