One Step Closer to the Ultimate in Home Entertainment
A single piece of hardware that allows consumers to play games, watch DVD’s and television is something of a Holy Grail. Sony made an attempt at this with the PlayStation 2’s DVD playback and backwards compatability, but the result is nowhere near as exciting as what nVidia have in store.

At this year’s European Computer Trade Show, nVidia announced Personal Cinema, a product claimed to be the most complete entertainment package available. The package, available to PC owners, will combine 3D graphics, video functionality and stunning DVD playback into a consumer friendly product, complete with remote control.

“Personal Cinema is the first product from nVidia targeted at delivering a full-range of multimedia and graphics technologies in one package to the PC home entertainment market,” said Dan Vivoli, Vice President of Marketing at nVidia. “By merging high-end graphics and professional level video features with a consumer friendly, universal remote control, Personal Cinema is a breakthrough in both power and ease of use for all-inclusive video/graphics solutions.”

"Creative is delighted to be the supplier of nVidia's Personal Cinema technology to the retail channel in Europe. We believe that this product brings the PC one step closer to being the centre of digital entertainment in the home." said Jean-Marc Dupuis, Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Creative Labs Europe. "The combination of Creative’s extensive experience in the development of multimedia technology and its strong presence in the retail channel, along with nVidia’s leadership in 3D graphics, makes this the ideal upgrade and a great opportunity for the consumer market.”

Granted, the requirement of a PC is an expensive downside to those who don’t already own one, but PC prices are plummeting by the day. You can rest assured though, running DVD software and games through a monitor guarantees the highest quality visuals available.

Who knows, the PC monitor may one day take over TV as the centrepiece of home entertainment.
