At an exclusive question and answer session held at the Nintendo show over the weekend, we were given the chance to quiz the Nintendo Vice President about the reported change of manufacturer of the Game Boy Advance screen.
We asked if the switch to Matsushita from Sharp Electronics would result in an improved screen. Earlier in the show David Gosen, President of Marketing for Nintendo Europe, showed ‘satisfaction figures’ taken from Game Boy Advance owners. The results showed a satisfaction rate of 88%.
Surely the remaining 12% were dissatisfied customers were finding issues with the disappointingly dull screen above anything else?
With the aid of an interpreter, Mr Iwata said “I understand that there have been many reports in the media which say that Nintendo will be changing the manufacturer of the LCD screen for Game Boy Advance. This is not true. There have been no deals, to the best of my knowledge, made with any other company.”
This seems strange to us. The reports relating to the screen manufacturer change were not just made up of tittle-tattle on the Internet. There were reports in the major technology press, giving very specific deals about the change.
Rumour on the show floor has it that Sharp must have offered Nintendo a deal that made it difficult to refuse. We will bring you more as we get it.
Unfortunately the Q and A session was not one in which the questioner was given the opportunity to follow up the initial response.
