Ashley Cheng, Production Director at Bethesda Game Studios, has written his thoughts on Microsoft's upcoming motion-sensing peripheral, Natal. And he has come to the conclusion that the company should open up the device to non-gaming applications. After reading a recent news story
surrounding the launch date of Natal, Cheng wrote that he was "blown away" by the potential, but that it "seems wasted on games, really."
"Microsoft should open the NATAL API up like Apple does with the iPhone/iPad," Cheng opined. "Let anyone make a NATAL 'app.' I bet someone makes a killer app that has nothing to do with gaming." Given Microsoft's emphasis on using the device for gaming, that would be rather ironic.
Cheng's comments follow similar calls for 'openness' from
Valve CEO Gabe Newell regarding the PlayStation 3.
