According to a report by survey specialists, Nielsen, potential PlayStation 3 buyers are more attracted to the console for its Blu-ray capabilities and recent price reduction. 'Killer apps' - the idea of buying a system on the hype of one specific game - ranks as the least important motivator.Nielsen used recent PS3 exclusive
God of War III as an example of the 'specific game' theory, interviewing over 700 active gamers aged 7-54 who didn't own a PS3 but were interested in buying one within six months. While
God of War III was certainly the most popular 'killer app' mentioned, only 12 per cent of gamers cited a specific game as the main reason for wanting the console.
Instead, Blu-ray capabilities amounted to 65% of the most important factors, while 63% said the price cut was a key motivator. While 'specific titles' ranked at the bottom of the table, the PS3's game library in general was important enough to 62% of gamers.
So to answer Nielsen's question, "How Much do Video Games Matter When Buying a Console?" we'd say "an awful lot actually."
