Nintendo has gone trademark loco and registered "3DS," "N3DS," "3DSWare" and "3DSPlay," indicating that the company might not be changing the name of its next-generation handheld before release. The filing of the latter two names also hints at potential services for the upcoming device, which will be able to allow users to play 3D-enabled portable games. '3DSWare' is likely to be a download service, offering bitesize games - the Nintendo DSi set a precedent with its DSiWare Shop.
'3DSPlay' is more intriguing. If it is anything like
WiiPlay, it could be a product consisting of several minigames that help players get to grips with the 3D technology.
According to
Siliconera, Nintendo has also registered the following names; DS Sound, DS Name Card, DS Magazine, DSMovie, DSCamera, DSCinema, DSMessage, DSMusic, and DSAlbum.
