In a somewhat surprising move Nintendo has announced that the GameCube will feature bold IBM branding on the case of the machine. IBM manufactures the graphical heart of the GameCube, the Gecko processor.

“IBM's growing business of selling and supplying technology to makers of consumer devices in the post-PC era has come of age," said Lee Green, IBM's corporate director of identity and design.

This sees Nintendo tempting fate once again. Not content with signing the new Soul Calibur game and hosting a port of Sonic Adventure 2, Nintendo is about to splash the branding of a huge American computer company across its hardware. Ring any bells?

More interestingly, this news adds weight to the growing rumors that put IBM in the “shall we or shall we not” stage of making a games machine. It was a failed tie-in with Nintendo that lead to Sony creating the PlayStation and Microsoft had detailed involvement with Sega’s development of the Dreamcast. Look what happened.

This goes back in history too. NEC made custom chipsets for consoles from Sega and Nintendo. The company then created the stunning 8-bit PC Engine.

Keep your eyes peeled and you might just see, in the next year or so, a console from IBM.
