Remedy Entertainment's managing director Matias Myllyrinne has spoken more about the story progression of Alan Wake, and the decisions behind the "Season One" structure that will pave the way for a "Season Two" sequel.Following
a story that SPOnG broke back in February, Myllyrinne told the
Sydney Morning Herald that the balance was in setting up reasonable cliffhangers while creating a game that could be enjoyed on its own.
"We wanted season one to define where things go but also have a successful game that stands on its own two feet and provides closure, allowing players to reach their goal," Myllyrinne explained. Although a "Season Two" (or sequel, to you and I) is inevitable, the director said that 'Specials' will be released over the course of the year to plug the gap between
Alan Wake games.
"Rather than players waiting for season two, we wanted to build in what we think of as a special, much like
Galactica the TV series did between seasons, where they'd do a special feature. This will be a cool change of pace, doing more than one special during this year, which will result in shorter projects and also an interesting change of pace for the team."
Those specials will naturally come in the form of downloadable content. Myllyrinne also revealed the difficulty he faced in revamping the entire game -
Alan Wake has been in development for several years, and once featured a sandbox-style open world. "It certainly wasn't easy for me cutting the sandbox component, because I knew how much money we had spent building this." the managing director admits.
Alan Wake will be hitting the Xbox 360 on the 14th May.
