Xbox to headline at SpaceWorld 2001? Upstaging antics in the East

The two new kids on the block fight for attention in Japan. This could be one of the most shortsighted marketing ploys in the history of the industry

The end of August in Japan belongs to Nintendo. SpaceWorld, which takes place between August 25th and 26th at Makuhari Messe in Japan, is Nintendo’s annual event at which it shows off its latest creations.

Today Microsoft Corp announced that it will be revealing the Japanese release date of the Xbox, on the 27th of August, the day after SpaceWorld closes its doors on what is likely to be the best show in the company’s history.

This is not likely to go down well in the honour-conscious land of Japan. Such a blatant attempt to upstage a firm favourite like Nintendo may result in Microsoft being purposefully overlooked in the console stakes.

There will be an unparalleled level of gaming euphoria in Japan after SpaceWorld 2001. It is likely that we are going to see a new Mario game, a new Pokemon game, a new Zelda title and Metroid Prime, all massive titles. There is even talk of Sonic the Hedgehog for GameCube being unveiled, a rumour that gathers pace and credibility daily. After all this amazing news, will the launch date of a console that the Japanese public doesn’t seem to really care about make any kind of impression at all?

We will bring you full SpaceWorld coverage and the Japanese release date for the Xbox as it happens.
