Nintendo revealed its upcoming 3DS handheld system yesterday, and an analyst has predicated that Sony could very well come up with a counter handheld device to help the PSP brand's chances in the West. The successor to the PSP and PSP Go will be announced in the Spring,
according to Lazard Capital's Colin Sebastian. He said that 3D technology will help "breathe more life into the hardware market," and even goes on to predict that a Wii successor will be unveiled this year too.
However, SCEA's director of hardware and marketing John Koller said Sony has no desire to chase 3D technology on a portable device. Commenting on Nintendo's surprising new product, Koller said to
IGN, "I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable.
"Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now."
Sony is focusing all of its 3D efforts on the home console space, with the first wave of capable TVs being launched in tandem with a PlayStation 3 firmware update in the Summer.
