Those of you wondering if Gears of War is a Microsoft-owned franchise, wonder no longer. Epic Games' Mark Rein has stated that the studio owns the rights to the IP and can take it wherever it chooses."We own
Gears of War. We can do what we want with it,” Rein explained. “We have a great relationship with Microsoft, and they helped turn the game into a huge success for us, and we are pretty happy with the way things are going.”
As well as working with Microsoft, Epic deals with many other companies as it licenses its Unreal engine to fellow developers. On top of this, it is also reportedly working on a shooter that will be published by Electronic Arts.
Could we see
Gears of War on other consoles then, if relationships between Epic and Microsoft turn sour? Perhaps. Perhaps not. It's nice to have a multiplatform dream though, isn't it?
