GameCube online plans emerge: 2002 is switch-on time!
Okay, it’s not a massive surprise that Nintendo is planning on putting the GameCube online sometime next year, but this report, printed in the morning edition of the Japanese newspaper, Nihon Keizai Shinbun, is the first time Nintendo has spoken about the timing of the venture.

As has already been announced, Nintendo will be releasing an integral 56K modem for the GameCube, alongside an integral broadband adapter, both of which can be housed underneath the main console.

The article confirmed that the first game to utilise the machine’s ‘Internet-iness’ will be Phantasy Star Online for GameCube, the current golden child of Sega’s Sonic Team.

Nintendo Chief Technical Officer Hiroshi Imanishi said “We plan to release our own software once we can confirm profitability in network games.” The article states that Nintendo will release an as yet unnamed game alongside the modem and broadband adapter. This is widely expected to be a Pokemon game with heavy emphasis on trading characters on a global basis.

All will be revealed at SpaceWorld next week.
