Sega’s Sonic Team has announced that it will be showing four titles at Nintendo’s SpaceWorld event, which takes place August 25th, and 26th at Makuhari Messe in Japan.
So far, only three titles have been confirmed for the event, namely Phantasy Star Online for the GameCube, Sonic Advance for Game Boy Advance, and Puyo Puyo, also for Game Boy Advance.
This announcement has started instant rumours that Sega is about to show off Sonic, or a Sonic demo on the GameCube. It sounds convincing enough at face value. Sega shows off a new game on the GameCube, the latest baby of its new best friend Nintendo.
You must remember that up until very recently, the two companies were arch-enemies, and had locked horns to a greater or lesser extent for 20 years. Old habits die hard.
If Sega were to show Sonic, it would be the main event of the entire show. Even if Mario Sunshine is unveiled to greater acclaim than Sonic, Sonic would steal the headlines from the show.
You can hope, as do we, that GameCube Sonic is shown later this month but it is unlikely. It would simply cause too much embarrassment to Nintendo. It is almost certain however, that Sonic is underway at Sonic Team’s development labs as you read this. The game, as mentioned before, is already complete for the Game Boy Advance. A GameCube version would be a more than welcome addition to the GameCube’s already strong line up. Just not yet.
