DRM Cripples Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 2, Silent Hunter 5
Ubisoft's controversial digital rights management (DRM) system, which requires that players of its new PC games be connected to the Internet at all times while playing, has come back to bite the publisher right in the face. Because of problems with the system, some PC gamers were unable to play their newly-bought copies of Assassin's Creed 2 and Silent Hunter 5 yesterday.

Although the problem was initially blamed on high demand, Ubisoft stated today that in fact its servers had been attacked. "Apologies to anyone who couldn’t play ACII or SH5 yesterday. Servers were attacked which limited service from 2:30pm to 9pm Paris time" Ubi said via its Twitter feed.

9pm, eh? Despite that statement, there were still gamers reporting problems on the Ubisoft forums this morning.

The publisher went on to state that "95% of players were not affected, but a small group of players attempting to open a game session did receive denial of service errors".

We certainly hope that no-one out there in the great wide world would be so malicious as to target Ubisoft's servers in an attempt to show up the problems inherent with the DRM...

Ubisoft claimed last week that even cracked pirated versions of ACII and SH5 will not work.
