Sony Computer Entertainment is following the lead set by its Japanese and American counterparts and is gauging the demand for a Linux development kit for the PlayStation 2 in Europe.
The open source Linux kit will enable hobby coders to bash together PlayStation 2 games and applications of their own, and may open the door to a whole host of new possibilities for the machine and its owners.
The kit went on sale in Japan and sold out in two hours. A re-release was undertaken two months later and again, all units were sold straight away.
Europe is possibly the territory that would potentially make the best use of such a machine. There are legions of hobby coders, time-served from the days of the 8Bit computer, itching to get their hands on a PlayStation 2 game-making machine.
