Burnout for PlayStation 2 first look! Shiny Red Car gets a dent

Secret racing game uncovered by Acclaim

Back in the heady, carefree days of May, we were busily scouring the showfloor of E3 on the hunt for the best in freebies the games industry had to offer.

Whilst we were cunningly extracting several miniature baseball bats from the Acclaim stand, an over-excited employee bust out of a viewing room, grabbed us roughly and hauled us inside. He wanted to show us a driving game that was referred to as either; Secret Driving Game, or Shiny Red Car.

Running on a PlayStation 2 debugging unit, it was little more than a tech demo at the time, showing a shiny red car thrashing around a city with no collision detection. It was a joy to play even at this early stage. The handling, physics and sense of speed had all been well put together. It just needed a purpose.

Today Acclaim has announced that this game will be called Burnout a game inspired by famous car chases from the film world. It is a racer set in busy city streets and, unlike Tokyo Highway Challenge and Midnight Club, will be a completely free-roaming experience.

“We set out to create an exciting, rewarding and intuitive arcade racing game that would appeal to the masses.” said Fiona Sperry, Studio Head and Vice President at developer Criterion Games. "Burnout has already generated excitement among the European media and was well received at E3, where we demonstrated the product behind closed doors.”

The game promises to be a real city racing romp and boasts “Real-time vehicle crashes, highlighted by amazing slow motion instant replays that dramatically illustrate the massive damage that can be unleashed.”

The game has already been in development for eighteen months and is still not complete, but a finished version is expected soon. There is no release date at this time.
